What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small piece of data that is sent to your computer or device browser from a website.  This data is stored on your hard drive if your internet browser preferences allow it.  Each website can send cookies but, to protect your privacy, websites are only allowed to read the data stored in cookies that they have sent to you.  Websites cannot read cookies sent by other websites.

During the course of a visit to a website the pages you see, as well as any cookies, are downloaded from the website to your device.  Websites do this to enable website publishers to find out useful information about your device and its user.  It also allows the website to recognise whether you have visited the website before by checking if a particular cookie already exists.

There are two main kinds of cookies: session cookies and persistent cookies.  Session cookies are deleted from your computer when you close your internet browser, whereas persistent cookies remain stored on your computer until deleted or until they reach their expiry date.

You have the opportunity to set your internet browser to accept, decline or notify you whenever a cookie is issued.  If you decline the cookie then it means you will not be able to take full advantage of certain personalised features that the website offers.  Each internet browser has a different way of changing your cookie preferences – the Help menu of your browser should allow you to find out how to do this.

The UK Institute of TFT uses cookies to record your selected preferences (such as a preferred language) which we use to tailor the website for you.
